Chapter 16

I woke up to a knocking sound and opened my eyes to see Taffy standing in a doorway. Without stepping inside, he gave me a thumbs up and waved for me to join him in the next room.

But I didn’t even know where this room was.

It was the polar opposite of Alaric’s old bar. Instead of resting on a half-decayed cot, I was neatly tucked into a queen-sized bed, complete with an abundance of pillows and a fluffy white comforter. The space was furnished with a dresser, TV, nightstand, and even an armchair by the window for me to perch in and think deeply about my unexplained arrival in this modernized heaven while gazing out at a sky with all the colors of a sunset, or sunrise; I had lost track. It was safe to assume that, if I ever found myself someplace this pleasant, it was a dream, maybe a Glaid-made facade to hide some rotten truth.

There was a neatly folded card standing on the nightstand next to me. I picked it up, flipped it open, and read its message.
